Exercising with a PICC line

You can maintain an active lifestyle

You are able to maintain an active lifestyle whilst you have a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line in place.

Your PICC line is secured in place and it is therefore safe to exercise.

We would advise you wait 48 hours after having your PICC line placed before you start exercising again, to allow for wound healing.

Please read through the following advice if you wish to exercise:

Swimming

You must NEVER swim with a PICC line in place. This is due to the high risk of infection.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, jogging, or cycling are important to keep your heart and lungs healthy and strong.

If you were active prior to having your PICC line you can continue as normal. If you are new to exercise, please speak to your Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) about a referral to Active Against Cancer who can advise you on starting an exercise programme.

Strength exercises

Such as body weight and free exercises. If you are used to this kind of exercise it is safe to carry on doing so. If you are new to exercise, please speak to your CNS about a referral to Active Against Cancer who can advise you on starting an exercise programme.

Golf, tennis and similar activities

If you normally do this kind of activity it is safe for you to continue as your body will be used to the movements. However, if you have not previously done this kind of activity it is not advisable to start following the insertion of your PICC line.

If you are unsure of what exercise to do, please speak with one of the nurses at the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre. If you would like advice on becoming active, please ask your nurse about Active Against cancer.
